Symphony No. 1 in E minor by African-American woman composer Florence Price

Beaufort Symphony Orchestra News   /   Aug 6th, 2020   /   0 COMMENTS   /  A+ | a-

Dear Music Lovers and Supporters,

In addition to presenting recordings from Beaufort Symphony Orchestra concerts, our goal is to introduce other works not yet performed by the BSO.

Our eighth offering is the Symphony No. 1 in E minor (1931-1932) by the African-American composer Florence Beatrice (née Smith) Price. A recording of the symphony is on YouTube: Florence Price: Symphony No. 1 in E minor, performed by the New Black Repertory Ensemble, Leslie B. Dunner, conducting.

Florence Price (b: April 9, 1887, d: June 3, 1953) was the first African-American woman composer to have a symphonic composition played by a major American orchestra when Maestro Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played the world premiere of her Symphony No. 1 in E minor on June 15, 1933. Ms. Price had submitted the symphony to the Rodman Wanamaker Competition in 1932 and won First Place for an orchestral composition. To learn more about pianist Florence Price, see her biography

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra. We are grateful for your consideration and generosity.

Sincerely,

Entire BSO Board & Musicians
