Dear Music Lovers and Supporters,
This week’s musical offering is My Fair Lady (1956). The music was composed by Frederick Loewe. The recording is from a concert by the BSO in February 2019 and is on YouTube: BSO plays My Fair Lady.
About the music, Maestro Fred Devyatkin writes, “Based on the George Bernard Shaw play, Pygmalion, My Fair Lady was one huge success among several for composer Frederick Loewe and lyricist, Jay Lerner. Premiering on Broadway and in London in 1956, they won a Tony for the year’s best musical. The film adaptation was released in 1964, winning eight Academy Awards. Rex Harrison starred in the Broadway and film version but Julie Andrews, who starred in the Broadway version, was passed over for Audrey Hepburn, whose vocals were dubbed by Marni Nixon. Enjoy this terrific instrumental arrangement of hits from the musical, as performed by the BSO in February, 2019. Enjoy!!”
In typical years, we receive revenue from donations, as well as from the sale of advertisement, season tickets and concert tickets. Donations, our largest source of revenue, are down 50% for the five months ending October 2020 on a year-over-year basis. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, we have received no other source of revenue this year. Therefore, our total revenue through October is 31% of last year's level. Although we are vigorously controlling costs and pursuing additional funding from grants and foundation money, donations to our general operating fund are the key to our survival. With no other source of revenue, and should concert venues open in 2021, donations are needed to fund concert preparation, e.g., rehearsal- and concert-space rental, musician pay and concert advertising.
We appreciate all who can donate to the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra.
Sincerely,
BSO Board and Musicians
